What’s the difference between Captor X and Captor X +?
This article outlines the key differences between Captor X and Captor X +, and explains why the Captor X + feature set is not available as a firmware update for Captor X. Both products remain professional, supported solutions, but they are built on different firmware platforms and offer different feature sets.
Key Feature Differences
True Stereo DynIR™ Engine
The True Stereo DynIR™ Engine introduces a powerful new way to expand Captor X +’s direct outputs.
- Independent Mic Placement and Panning
- In Captor X +’s Stereo Mode, Position and pan two microphones (or static IRs) independently within the stereo field to transform your direct signal into a three-dimensional soundstage.
- Dual Mono Routing
- In Captor X +’s Dual Mono Mode, Send each mic to its own output, with access to an independent mic- and Post-FX Suite for precise tonal control. The Post FX Suite available for each Mic Channel includes a Mic EQ, a mono Enhancer, a Mono Reverb and an Output EQ
Virtual Load Shaper
The Virtual Load Shaper introduces a powerful new way to refine your Captor X +’s direct outputs.
- Post-Load Impedance Curves
- By applying either a custom user generated preset, or one of the expertly designed stock preset post-load impedance curves, the Virtual Load Shaper reshapes the tonal character of your amp’s signal after the internal hardware load stage.
- Direct Outputs Only
- These tonal refinements are applied exclusively to your XLR and headphone feeds, while your companion cabinet connection remains completely unaffected.
Advanced Routing & Processing Options - Exclusive to Captor X +
With Captor X +, the following routing options are available:
- Independent Mic Placement and Panning
- In Captor X +’s Stereo Mode, Position and pan two microphones (or static IRs) independently within the stereo field to transform your direct signal into a three-dimensional soundstage.
- Dual Mono Routing

USB-C Connectivity - Exclusive to Captor X +
Captor X + introduces USB-C connectivity for modern, reliable integration with computers and compatible devices when using Torpedo Remote.
Firmware Architecture & Update Scope
- Captor X and Captor X + are built on different firmware platforms.
- Captor X is feature-complete by design and remains fully supported on its established firmware. Captor X + is built on a new firmware platform that required a full architectural overhaul, resulting in an entirely different product.
- Given the scope of these changes, this firmware platform cannot be delivered to Captor X users as a practical update—changes of this scale are not suited to delivery through a field update to existing units.
- For this reason, Captor X and Captor X + are supported on separate firmware platforms, each aligned to the product’s defined design and feature set.
