I Cannot Play my Amp Silently - There's no Sound in my Headphones When I Disconnect the Cabinet
Both the Torpedo Captor X and Captor allow you to play your tube amp silently. The Captor X features a headphones output, while the Captor needs to be plugged to a mixing desk or an audio interface to be monitored through headphones. If you have no sound when you disconnect the cabinet from the Captor or Captor X in your headphones, this means the speaker cables coming in and out of the Torpedo unit are not connected to the right input and output. This is a very common mistake when using combo amps as the internal speaker often features its own jack cable. Here is how to solve the issue (illustrated with the back of a Marshall JVM410 combo):
- First, turn off the amp
- The internal speaker is connected to the amp through the circled cable. Disconnect this cable
- Connect an additional speaker cable to the output where the internal speaker cable was connected. Connect the other end of the additional speaker cable to the SPEAKER IN (red bolt) of the Captor or Captor X
- Your amp is now connected to the Captor or Captor X
- If you wish to use the attenuator, connect the internal speaker cable (highlighted in green in the image above) to the SPEAKER OUT of the Captor X or SPEAKER ATT of the Captor
- For Fender amps like Hot Rod Deluxe or Deville, the speaker outputs are not as clearly labelled as in the previous example:
- Disconnect the internal cable (highlighted in red on both images above)
- As shown in the owner's manual of the Fender Hot Rod amps (https://www.fmicassets.com/Damroot/Original/10001/2231200_gamp_manual.pdf), connect the additional cable to the output labelled V on the diagram
- You should then connect the internal speaker cable of the amp to the SPEAKER OUT of the Captor X. This way you will be able to use the attenuator of the Captor X and send your amp signal to your audio interface or the PA. You will also be able to play your amp silently by disconnecting the internal speaker cable of the amp that is connected to the SPEAKER OUT of the Captor X
