Using the Torpedo Captor X With a Cabinet

When using Captor X as an attenuator in tandem with a Cabinet, a summary of the resultant impedance behaviour is summarised below:

  • VOLUME LEVEL set to the FULL position: The attenuator is bypassed. The output acts as a THROUGH output. The impedance shown to your amp is the cabinet's impedance. You are advised to use the corresponding output of your amp in relation to the connected cabinet (i.e. 4 Ohms output for a 4 Ohms cabinet, 8 Ohms output for an 8 Ohms cabinet, 16 Ohms output for a 16 Ohms cabinet)
  • VOLUME LEVEL on LOW or halfway position: The attenuator is in use. The impedance shown to the amp is that of the Captor X (either 8- or 16-ohms depending on the Captor X variant used). Use the matching output of your amp (8- or 16-Ohms). The impedance of the cabinet connected to the speaker output does not have any impact on the impedance seen by the amp.

In a scenario where the VOLUME LEVEL of the Captor X’s attenuator is set to FULL - and the amp & Captor X are matched, but the cabinet is rated at a different impedance to that of the Captor X - you will have an impedance mismatch.

This article will help you understand more about an impedance mismatch and precautionary considerations that need to be taken into account:

WARNING: Be sure to check which amp's output is used if you have a Captor X 16 Ohms and a 4 Ohms cabinet. In the case where the VOLUME LEVEL is on FULL, the impedance mismatch is too high (4 vs 16) if the 16 Ohms output of your amplifier is used.
