Returning your Two notes hardware unit

Choosing a Power Supply for Your Captor X / X+

Captor X and Captor X+ are supplied with a dedicated power supply designed to provide optimal performance and the lowest possible noise floor. While a variety of third-party power supplies can also be used, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind.

Why We Recommend the Included Power Supply

The supplied Captor X / Captor X+ power supply is grounded, which significantly reduces ambient electrical noise compared to most third-party pedalboard power supplies. For this reason, we strongly recommend using the included power supply whenever possible to ensure optimal signal-to-noise performance and the best overall user experience.

Captor X / Captor X+ Power Requirements

Captor X / Captor X+ requires the following power specifications:

  • Input Voltage: 12V DC
  • Current Draw: 200 mA (minimum)
  • Polarity: Centre Negative (Please see the image below)

Compatible Third-Party Power Supplies

The following third-party power supplies have been tested by Two notes and meet the power and signal-to-noise requirements of Captor X / Captor X+:

  • CIOKS SOL
  • CIOKS DC7
  • Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 3
  • Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 3 Plus
While these units have been validated, we still recommend using the supplied power adapter whenever practical.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a non-grounded power supply?

Yes. Using a non-grounded power supply will not damage your Captor X / Captor X+. However, because most non-grounded power supplies do not provide the same level of noise isolation, you may experience:

  • Increased ambient electrical noise
  • Additional background hiss
  • Voodoo Lab Pedal Power 3
  • Ground loop hum, depending on the rest of your setup
Interestingly, in some situations where a ground loop already exists elsewhere in your rig, a non-grounded power supply may actually help eliminate the hum by breaking the ground loop. Results will vary depending on the configuration of your equipment.

Can I power Captor X / Captor X+ with a 9V power supply?

Yes. Captor X / Captor X+ can operate from a 9V DC, centre-negative power supply capable of delivering at least 200 mA. Please note that operating the unit at 9V provides slightly less input headroom than the recommended 12V supply. For maximum performance and dynamic range, we recommend using the supplied 12V power adapter whenever possible.
